Teacher and technology specialist Cindy Wilkins is one of three teachers at the four-room Hanksville Elementary School in rural Hanksville. Responsible for all staff and student technology training, Mrs. Wilkins takes what she calls a toolistic approach to computers-i.e., she teaches students to use technology as a tool for learning rather than as the object of learning itself. In a region that is not widely Internet-accessible, she established the school's popular Computer/Homework Lab, which makes technology available to both students and community members. Mrs. Wilkins employs several non-technological strategies in her classroom, including Reading - the Four Literacy Blocks, which helps her students progress from learning-to-read to reading-to-learn.
