Teacher Christopher J. Monte promotes creativity and higher order thinking skills in his U.S. history classes at J.F. Webb High School in Oxford. Using the "Choices" public policy program developed by Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies, Mr. Monte engages students in research and debate on topics ranging from the leadership and effectiveness of U.S. presidents during the Progressive Era to the current war on terrorism. These debates help students learn to recognize the relationships between history and current issues. Mr. Monte maintains a classroom Web site with review notes, sample tests, essay writing suggestions, and links to useful resources. A National Board Certified teacher, Mr. Monte is currently working with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction on a curriculum writing team to produce support documents to be used statewide by classroom teachers.
