Though seventh-grade science teacher Christine Pace ensures high quality learning for all her students at East Junior High School in Wisconsin Rapids, she strongly promotes interest in math and science among girls and women. Her "Hand Cream Chemistry" unit sparks young girls' interest in chemistry by showing them the science behind everyday cosmetics and hair products. She also received a grant to involve students in her presentations at the "Women in Science" state conference. Ms. Pace's activity-based curriculum includes a unit on forensic science in which students investigate a mock crime scene and make field trips to the city jail. She was instrumental in developing the school's new integrated science curriculum and aligning it to state standards, and has secured grants to acquire various classroom resources.
