An English-language arts teacher at Albany Middle School in Alameda County, Chiyomi Masuda also served as a teacher trainer. She was a California Literature Project coach and an evaluator for the Middle School Demonstration Program. Ms. Masuda was known for her literary expertise and in 1991 she was appointed to the State Curriculum Commission. Ms. Masuda spent many years teaching at the elementary level, where she was highly regarded for her ability to integrate and teach all subjects with equal enthusiasm and expertise. A lifelong student with a passion for learning, she hoped to inspire similar passion in her students.
