Using hands-on activities, manipulatives, pacing guides, portfolio assessment and other effective techniques, third-grade teacher Cheryl Smith has helped her students at Elizabethtown Primary School in Elizabethtown improve their end-of-grade test scores. Always striving to improve her instruction, Mrs. Smith's curriculum changes from year to year, reflecting what she learns from the summer workshops she coordinates for fellow teachers. A National Board Certified teacher, Mrs. Smith was one of three teachers in the district selected by the superintendent to participate in the "Growing Future Leaders" program. She chairs the Curriculum and Staff Development Committees, serves on the School Improvement Team, and was responsible for establishing a local chapter of the International Reading Association.
