Cheryl Fisher taught kindergarten through grade six at Providence's International Studies Magnet Program. A former Providence Teacher of the Year (1989), honored with a resolution from the City Council, she helped students realize the importance of reading with her Celebrity Reader Program. In 1985, this 17-year veteran of the Providence school system received a citation from the speaker of the House of Representatives for coordinating a program called "Children Helping Children," which kicked off a city-wide fundraiser for victims of famine in Ethiopia. Despite her many personal achievements, she was proudest of one scored by her students: a 1984 play honoring a visit by Rosa Parks to Rhode Island.
