Cherlyn Anderson, who teaches earth science, world geography and reading at rural Sandhills Middle School in Gaston, has given her students a leg up in all subjects by acquiring multimedia computers and Internet access for her classroom. A former computer education teacher, Mrs. Anderson has developed several programs to encourage her students' interest in science and technology, including Project GEMS (Girls Excited about Math and Science), a program designed to teach math, science and technology to at-risk eighth-grade girls while building their self-esteem and career and social skills. Mrs. Anderson also brings parents and the community closer to the school through events such as Math and Science Family Nights and Stargazing Night.
