At Jacob Beidler Elementary School, special needs teacher Charles Hall utilizes a wide spectrum of innovative instructional techniques and materials to meet his students’ individual needs, including graphic organizers, student-made books, peer tutoring and Internet assignments. Mr. Hall initiated a boys-to-men rap session, in which his students can express themselves and discuss issues concerning them. He focuses on building their self-esteem and encouraging high moral standards. Many of his students have attained academic success, received writing awards and won spelling bees and oratory contests. As a member of the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) grant team, Mr. Hall monitors the inclusion of special needs students in general education programs. Outside of school, Mr. Hall produces musical events for the Chicago Gospel Music Association.
