Charles Bowen, a teacher at Jefferson School in Morton, inspires self-discipline and enthusiasm in his fifth-grade students. He stresses the importance of writing in all his classes, and strives to incorporate the exercise into their everyday routine. Students learn responsibility and organizational skills by keeping a planning notebook for assignments, test and quiz schedules and other projects. An educator for 16 years, Mr. Bowen employs his creativity to improve curriculum effectiveness in the classroom: he has spearheaded the district's science and reading curriculum reviews and the creation of local objectives and assessment plans for those subjects.
