Though earlier this year Cathy Ann Priest became an English teacher at Perry High School in Perry, she has been a social studies teacher for 11 years, during which time she has led her students to investigate some of the most challenging and urgent issues of the day. Using books, films and the Internet, her students have explored the issue of tolerance, doing research into the Holocaust and hate groups, and have also learned how to critically evaluate the media and the way in which it shapes public perceptions and attitudes. In 1992, Mrs. Priest accompanied three of her students on an extended safari to Tanzania after they won a national academic competition.
