At Cottrell F. Hoxsie School in Warwick, Catherine T. Sharkey encourages her fifth- and sixth-grade students to become independent thinkers. She creates living museums so students can get hands-on experience of the particular culture they are studying. During Olympic years, Miss Sharkey’s students research one country participating in the games. A strong proponent of technology, Miss Sharkey participated in the Rhode Island Teachers and Technology Initiative (RITTI). Her use of technology provides an opportunity for all students, including those with special needs, to meet with success in the classroom. She is a member of the school improvement team, the technology committee, and the board of directors for the Pontiac Free Library.
