Caroline Comi is a music specialist who teaches the K-5 students at Hoaff Elementary School in Pueblo. "From an early age I knew the joys of music, poetry, good books and theatre," says Ms. Comi. "I was born to a Welsh family, and one of the main exports of Wales is teachers. So this was my mold and it inspired me to become a teacher." Ms. Comi helps her students produce their own programs, plays, recordings and videos as well as to write their own music. She enlists the time and support of parents and other community members for transportation, costume making and musical accompaniment. Having redesigned the music curriculum as an interdisciplinary endeavor, Ms. Comi uses current topics from social studies, mathematics and other subjects, incorporating them into thematic units. Working with other teachers she finds songs and dances that correlate with her students' other studies in order to create a more rounded educational experience.
