Principal Carol Wheeler of Colchester's Jack Jackter Elementary School believes that daily societal pressure hampers a child's ability to learn. So she trains her teachers in support techniques for students and parents, encouraging early intervention to counter negative social influences. The cornerstone of her approach is a collaboration of students, teachers, parents and community, brought together with a comprehensive Family Resource Center that includes a school-based childcare program. Ms. Wheeler has been an Education Enhancement Act Fellow and a Connecticut LEAD Award winner.
