Carol Burton, first-grade teacher at Hernando Elementary School in Hernando, uses everything from manipulatives and technology to music, games and poetry to motivate and inspire her students to learn. Mrs. Burton also helps educate fellow teachers, writing the math plans for other first-grade teachers at Hernando, conducting in-service sessions, mentoring new teachers and serving as instructional supervisor for student teachers through the University of Mississippi's Professional Development Site Program. As a member of the Mississippi Council of Teachers of Math, Mrs. Burton has presented at local, state and national levels, and is chair of the Council's 2001 Math Conference. At the state level, she is a member of the Math Standards Committee and the Textbook Adoption Committee.
