Canary (Whitfield) Melvin teaches the kindergarten and first grade students at Metter Primary School in Metter. "I am an educator because I want to help provide opportunities for children to explore and strive for excellence in daily experiences, to share and extend experiences in creative ways, and to motivate them to discover their unique characteristics as they work and play cooperatively," says Ms. (Whitfield) Melvin. Within her classroom she has created a successful learning environment through the heterogeneous multi-age grouping of children. She is a member of the League of Professional Schools - an educator network developed to address current issues concerning the profession. Ms. (Whitfield) Melvin's fundraising efforts contributed to the creation of a computer lab which provides one computer for every two teachers.
