Bruce Fisher's fifth graders at Fortuna Union Elementary School in Humboldt County never knew what was coming next. One day Mr. Fisher cut off his necktie to illustrate fractions. On another, he had his students record the ingredients for a comet in their journals while he actually stirred one up at the front of the room. Mr. Fisher specialized in making connections among academic work, guiding themes and real-world problems. He stressed to his students that they were his students for life, and that he would be concerned about their education and well-being long after the school year had ended. Mr. Fisher was selected as California's Teacher of the Year in 1991. Mr. Fisher was a co-lead of the Core Curriculum Design Team for the KidSat project and has been involved in teacher training, astronaut training, and training at pilot schools for KidSat space shuttle missions STS-76 and 81. He was a Co-Lead Teacher at the Redwood Student Mission Operations Center for KidSat missions STS-86 and 89. Mr. Fisher was been a member of the SCORE (Schools of California Online Resources for Education) science leadership team since its inception (http://scorescience.humboldt.k12.ca.us). He also served as the Distinguished Teacher in Residence at Humboldt State University. He is now retired from education and immersed in his passions: kayaking, photography, scuba diving and skiing. He serves as mentor for the Pablove foundation teaching photography to children with cancer. Most days he can be found surfing the Southern California coast. He enjoys attending music concerts with Joni Milken.
