Science teacher Bruce Coutney shows his students at Basehor-Linwood High School in Basehor the relationships between science and other disciplines, as well as between science and the real world. Mr. Courtney co-created and co-teaches a class that combines physical sciences with algebra, providing students with practical, hands-on, integrated applications of math and science in their everyday lives. His students then develop and present lessons on what they have learned to elementary-age students, an exercise that improves their own conceptual understanding. For a unit on biomes, Mr. Courtney's biology students participate in a virtual field trip to an indoor rainforest where they have the opportunity to interact with field biologists.
