Bonnie Elliott taught Spanish to the students of Bend Senior High School in Bend. Ms. Elliott used both the Spanish language and culture curricula to open the minds of her teenage students and help them to be tolerant and understanding. She was particularly proud of those students who continued in their Spanish studies and used the language to help others or themselves to achieve their goals. Both demanding and caring, Ms. Elliott said, "I expect excellence - not necessarily a single standard of excellence, but a level of achievement higher than the student himself might have aimed for." In 1991, Ms. Elliott was recognized as Oregon Teacher of the Year. She believed there is no higher calling than to educate.
