Social studies teacher Bonnie Dill has created interdisciplinary units that give her sixth graders at Wells Junior High School in Wells a chance to personally experience history. Last year, her students re-enacted the Battle of Bull Run, complete with costumes, fake weapons and props. The re-enactment, which the students videotaped, resulted in an overall improvement in retention of the subject content. In another of Mrs. Dill's units, "Engines of Change," students research a 19th century American agent of change - either a reform movement, a reformer, an invention or an inventor - and then present the results of their research to fellow students and parents through writing, visual arts and oral communication.
