Despite the challenges of growing up as a sharecropper's daughter, social studies teacher Bobbie Owensby devoted herself to education, and is now a role model for many students at Marion High School in Marion. Among Mrs. Owenby's successful initiatives is a peer tutoring program called Peers Helping Peers that enables students to learn from each other while helping them develop new friendships and a sense of accomplishment. She created an elementary-level summer enrichment program that provides children with supplementary and remedial instruction by licensed teachers. In addition, Mrs. Owensby developed a College Tours program at Marion, in which students raise funds for bus tours to historical black colleges.
