Motivating students to do their best at Dr. Gerald D. Cobb Sixth Grade Campus in Houston is mathematics teacher Billie B. Briggs' passion. She uses group work, peer tutoring and hands-on activities to keep her students engaged, and gives weekly tests to assess their learning. As Math Department Chair, Mrs. Briggs attends conferences to learn new teaching strategies to share with colleagues. She established Galena Park Independent School District's first Math & Science Club and was instrumental in developing a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society at the school. She played a key role in developing the school's "double-blocked" math classes. Mrs. Briggs currently serves as National Junior Honor Society advisor, mentors new teachers and represents secondary-level math on the District Planning and Advisory Committee.
