Math and science teacher Becky Mendez has created a dynamic hands-on learning environment in her fourth-grade classroom at Elrod Elementary School in San Antonio. As campus science facilitator, Mrs. Mendez promotes science learning by planning and coordinating activities such as math/science family nights. She established the Young Astronauts Program at Elrod Elementary, through which she arranges weekend trips to NASA and helps coordinate the district's annual overnight stargazing party. Co-author of the district's fourth-grade science curriculum, Mrs. Mendez is a frequent staff presenter, offering creative workshops and sharing best instructional practices with fellow teachers. She is also an effective teacher of reading, engaging her students in a scrapbook project that also involves parents.
