At Pioneer Education Center in Pittsburgh, a K-12 school serving physically- and mentally-challenged children, arts and technology teacher Barbara New helps students gain the skills and self-confidence to overcome their obstacles. Mrs. New's NetBook Project enables students to design their own Web pages, complete with digital images, sound effects and individual success stories that students write. Some of Mrs. New's students have gained employment through the computer skills they learned under her tutelage. As the chair of the school technology committee, Mrs. New was responsible for developing the school's technology plan. She has also piloted an electronic assessment portfolio system and frequently provides computer training and support to both parents and staff.
