Barbara Gordon-Cobb, kindergarten teacher at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Hartford, has developed effective learning opportunities throughout her career for her predominantly low-income, minority students. At a previous school, Wish Elementary School in Hartford, Mrs. Gordon-Cobb reduced the incidence of social conflicts and improved her students' writing skills through a program called Changing School Climate, in which her students exchanged letters with children in other classes. Her students at Wish developed a partnership with students from an affluent local high school to prepare a flower garden in front of the school. Formerly the black history chairperson at Wish, Mrs. Gordon-Cobb also initiated a schoolwide science fair.
