Barbara Fendley teaches biology to grades ten through twelve at du Pont Manual High School in Louisville. Five years ago, Mrs. Fendley decided to act on the need she perceived for an advanced level biology course that emphasized the use of technology. To this end, she developed a proposal that met with the approval of a number of local agencies and won a major grant for the school. Subsequently, Mrs. Fendley developed a high school biotechnology program that has grown to include two sections. Mrs. Fendley is also involved in professional development activities that focus on the interdisciplinary teaching of math and chemistry as well as peer coaching. In 1993, the Kentucky Academy of Science recognized Mrs. Fendley as a Kentucky Outstanding Secondary School Science Teacher.
