Teacher April La Detta Lowe uses creative and innovative techniques to reach all her kindergarten and first-grade students at Parkway Elementary School in Ewing. Using eight different reading strategies as well as manipulatives and writing journals, Miss Lowe makes difficult topics easy to understand. While at the beginning of the school year only 20 percent of her students could read, by the end of the year all children were reading. She also improved discipline, implementing programs that resulted in a 50 percent reduction of student referrals. Currently training to become a principal, Miss Lowe was recently chosen as coordinator of Ewing Township's Summer School Program, for which she has assisted in the development of the curriculum. She is chairperson of both the liaison and African-American committees and a member of the principal's advisory and student success committees.
