Anne LeBlanc-Erquiza's third-grade classroom at Kamiloiki Elementary School in Honolulu is more than a classroom; it's a writing laboratory. Through a Hawaii State pilot writing program she developed called the Standards-Based Integration Project (SBIP), students gain writing skills, technology literacy and self-confidence as they use computers to write, evaluate, revise, illustrate and publish their own works. They then present these works at an annual "Author's Tea" involving parents, staff and community members. As the SBIP school support teacher, she trains other educators in this program, which has resulted in improved writing scores. Mrs. LeBlanc-Erquiza has also developed a system to track student performance that allows even the students to monitor their own progress.
