Anna Jackson teaches ninth grade English at Carbondale High School in Carbondale. She strives to reveal the excitement and human interest of such towering figures as Homer, Shakespeare, and Dickens, and she strives to cultivate in her students tremendous affection and respect for great writers. Contemporary authors, including a Nobel Laureate, visit her classes and read their works to students. Ms. Jackson maintains a non-threatening atmosphere as well as high expectations for students, a highly effective combination. Ms. Jackson involves the entire family in learning with audio and video recordings of classes, and she encourages students, siblings, friends, and parents to read books and articles on central themes, and then discuss them in groups. Ms. Jackson is active at the local, state, and national levels of the Council of Teachers of English and is a strong advocate of multiculturalism in both course content and teaching styles.
