When learning about World War II, the students in language arts teacher Ann Tolliver's class at Berry Middle School in Lebanon are not confined to textbooks. Mrs. Tolliver requires them to write a historical fiction piece, write letters to World War II veterans and actively participate in a rationing program, all of which are designed to give them a comprehensive and penetrating understanding of the period surrounding the war. Students also deliver oral book reports, which she videotapes to help them improve their public speaking skills. After school, Mrs. Tolliver provides an intervention program for students who are struggling academically, enlisting the aid of National Honor Society and college students as tutors.
