At Prairie Wind Elementary School in Omaha, Ann Catania incorporates a wide array of activities based on current brain research to stimulate the minds of her second graders. Not surprisingly, her class scored in the 96th percentile on last year's standardized tests. An expert in economics education, Mrs. Catania piloted the first economics program for elementary students in cooperation with the Economics Department at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, which led U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley to visit her classroom. She also helped develop national standards for economics education. Mrs. Catania has been instrumental in the development, monitoring and assessment of the school's ongoing strategic plan and has contributed her leadership to numerous school and district committees.
