As Title I reading teacher at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Madison, Andreal De-Ette Davis teaches literacy to third- and fourth-grade students who are below grade-level. Since she joined the Title I teaching department, the percentage of students proficient and advanced on the fourth-grade Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examinations (WKCE) Reading has risen significantly. As literacy coach at Lincoln Elementary, Mrs. Davis developed a literacy workshop called "Ethnic Melodies: Hearing Voice and Harmony in African-American Children's Literature." She also established a vibrant parent involvement program as part of the school's comprehensive school reform demonstration grant. An active member in the community, Mrs. Davis, along with her family, established and leads the African-American Academy for African-American students every Saturday in the fall. Mrs. Davis recently received the University of Wisconsin School of Education Distinguished Alumni award.
