"The field of education is the most intrinsically rewarding profession one can choose," says Alma Vining, principal of Robert E. Lake Elementary School in Las Vegas. Ms. Vining is active in a variety of district, state and national educational organizations, including several curriculum development task forces. As a member of the Latin Chamber of Commerce, she has effectively promoted the teaching profession and the creation of scholarship programs for the Latino community. Under her guidance, her school has adopted an integrated curriculum with a special focus on multi-cultural units. Spanish language classes are already in place for first and second graders at the school, and Ms. Vining plans to expand the program to include an additional class every year. Ms. Vining has also supported the implementation of GOTCHA, a school-wide incentive program designed to reward students for being reliable, respectful and responsible.
