Allen Janes retired from teaching mathematics to ninth through twelfth grades at Red River High School in Grand Forks. His own eighth grade history teacher and German teacher impressed him so deeply that he decided not only to join their profession but also emulate their classroom style - a style that understands how well joy and hard work can mix. Mr. Janes "loves teaching young people the beauty and intricacies of mathematics," and he would like to see the day when "North Dakota has a state-wide, senior high mathematics competition." He would also like to see his district's mathematics curriculum incorporate more of the latest technologies and become an even better model of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics National Standards. Such improvements, he believes, will "help us meet the needs of our students well into the next century." His concern for each individual student and his desire to enhance math education in his state reflect the breadth of his vision as an educator.Â
