Alfred P. Balasco teaches social studies at Smithfield High School and serves as department chairman. He was Rhode Island Teacher of the Year in 1988 and wrote the Voter Education Manual for Secondary Schools, as a resource distributed by the Rhode Island Secretary of State throughout the states high schools. His professional and community involvements are extensive. Among his many affiliations, Mr. Balasco is a member of the committee for the development of a Model Program Evaluation Plan coordinated by the Rhode Island Social Studies Association and the Regional Laboratory for Education Improvement, and also belongs to the evaluation team of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. He is equally vigorous in the classroom, where he is known for his use of guest speakers with personal knowledge of the event he is teaching.
