Six years ago, Alan Felker, seventh-grade science and math teacher at Hardin Park School in Boone, was co-recipient of a major grant that allowed him and the school's media coordinator to acquire sufficient video equipment and training to support an entire closed-circuit television station. Hardin Park Television, the student-operated station on the Hardin Park campus, allows students the opportunity to produce and broadcast original programming throughout the school, including a live news show, commercials, and original music. In addition to teaching, Mr. Felker, an avid outdoorsman, supervises the Highland Runners, a medium-distance, cross-country running program for teachers and seventh- and eighth-grade students at Hardin Park.
