Keric Ashley, the California Department of Education performance, planning and technology branch deputy superintendent, congratulates Pacifica High on its state assessment scores, the highest in the district. “You don’t have to grow up with a lot of money to excel," he tells the students. "It doesn’t matter if you didn’t start out speaking English or where your family is from.” When Ashley shares his personal goals for continuous self-improvement, students join in to complete his sentences: “This year I’m going to be better than last year. This month, I’m going to be better than last month. This week, better than last week. And today, better than yesterday.”
