Milken Educator Award recipient Vanessa Torres addresses the assembly gathered in her honor. "Your whole life can change when you know another language and learn about another culture," she tells the crowd. Torres teaches all students from kindergarten through fifth grade at Nursery Road Elementary, a high-performing Title I school. She immerses students in storytelling, skits, games, songs, salsa dancing, and peso point prize raffles—all conducted entirely in Spanish.
