Mary Edwards teaches home economics and science to the ninth through twelfth grade students of Yates Center High School in Yates Center. Ms. Edwards uses a variety of teaching methods including cooperative learning, computers and class discussions to promote critical thinking among her students. A firm believer in the efficacy of mentoring and peer education, Ms. Edwards aims to build self-esteem and the kind of basic social skills that will allow her students to succeed-whether as a worker, a spouse, a single person or a parent. Ms. Edwards has been an advisor to the Future Homemakers of America (FHA) since 1978 and in 1987 saw five of her students compete in the FHA/Home Economics Related Occupations Leadership Meeting in Washington, D.C.
