Joseph T. Crawford is a senior consultant with Learning Keys, a nonprofit educational organization in Phoenix, Arizona. Previously, Crawford was assistant superintendent for Freeport School District 145 in Freeport, Illinois. Before that, as principal of Crete-Monee Middle School in Crete, Illinois, Crawford promoted the concept that schools should be administered based on a model of shared decision-making. "I hope to show that education does not have to be a top-down bureaucracy," said Crawford. While he was principal at Crete-Monee, the school won the National Excellence Award twice, for which Crawford and members of his staff were honored at the White House.
