Mike is an education consultant who works with teachers on topics such as using choice to teach students self-differentiation, blending social-emotional and academic learning, and maintaining teacher health and balance. He is the author of eight books about teaching and learning including: What We Say and How We Say It Matter (ASCD, 2019), Learning to Choose, Choosing to Learn (ASCD, 2016), The Well-Balanced Teacher (ASCD, 2010), The First Six Weeks of School, 2nd Edition (CRS, 2015), and The Research-Ready Classroom (Heinemann, 2006). Mike taught third, fourth, and fifth grades for fifteen years and has also taught in preschools, coached swim teams, and taught university graduate classes. Mike lives in Durham, New Hampshire, with his wife, Heather, and their two children, Ethan and Carly.
