At MAST (Maritime Science and Technology) Academy in Miami, National Board Certified teacher Mark Tohulka's marine and environmental science classes help students make real-world connections to careers in oceanic exploration and conservation. Mr. Tohulka once spent three days living and working in an underwater habitat as a station engineer, teleconferencing with students and creating videos of the experience to share with his class. He has engaged students in an ecosystem restoration project, and coached the school's National Ocean Sciences Bowl team to the national championship. Mr. Tohulka is president of the Florida Association of Science Teachers, and a member of NASA’s Life Science Educator Network. He has received several prestigious honors, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching.
