Prior to retiring in 2011, Dr. Gary A. Batsell served as the Executive Principal of Discovery Canyon Campus. Dr. Batsell was responsible for writing the educational concept, supervising the design and construction, and implementing the educational programs for the PreK-12 science/mathematics choice program for Academy School District 20 in Colorado Springs. In addition to being a TAP site, the campus features enhanced educational benefits for students, extended learning opportunities, integration of Space & Aviation sciences, a unique administrative design, and International Baccalaureate Programme options. Discovery Canyon Campus is designed to accommodate 2,950 PreK-12 students in a 500,000-square-foot facility on an 84-acre site. Dr. Batsell is a consultant, Authorization/Evaluation site visitor and workshop presenter for IB Americas. He also served on the IBA Regional Council as a North America Head of School representative. Prior to his role as Executive Principal, Dr. Batsell was the principal of Timberview Middle School, Academy District 20 (2000- 04), Cholla Middle School in Phoenix, Arizona (1987- 2000), and Humboldt Middle School in Dewey, Arizona (1982-87). Dr. Batsell has also established relationships with numerous teacher preparatory programs in Arizona and Colorado, and has served on legislative panels, national middle-level committees, and Blue Ribbon Schools panels for the U.S. Department of Education.
