At Lincoln Heights Elementary and Preschool Center in Morristown, where many students are considered at-risk or qualify for Title I, principal Melvin Blevins opened his students' minds to new worlds of learning. He compensated for the region's lack of educational arts facilities by establishing the "Lincoln Art Gallery," where students could encounter works by well-known artists. Mr. Blevins created the LHE Discovery Zone, an interactive science environment that emphasized hands-on learning and encouraged children to pursue careers in science. Mr. Blevins attended conferences and trained teachers in his efforts to oversee the implementation of the Positive Attitudes in Tennessee Schools (PATS) program at his school.
