Biographical Information
"For me, teaching is about passion and compassion," says Katherine Bauer, who leads a self-contained classroom of fifth-graders at Rockport Elementary School in Rockport. Mrs. Bauer, who is extensively involved in professional development activities at both the district and state level, is currently a member of MCEC (Mid-Coast Educator's Consortium), a group devoted to the promotion of science and math education. In her classroom, Mrs. Bauer implements the many learning strategies - Responsive Classroom, Critical Skills, Whole Language methodology - that she has had a chance to explore and perfect through her many professional development pursuits. The Responsive Classroom and "reflective practice" concepts that she champions have permitted her to develop highly successful adapted curriculum projects that reflect students' interests and intellectual progress. In 1996, Mrs. Bauer was honored by the White House as a Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Science and Mathematics.
