Trudi Niewiaroski teaches world history and East Asian history at Rockville's Richard Montgomery High School. Mrs. Niewiaroski has visited or lived in eighty-one countries worldwide, and "the world is her textbook" of choice. "I teach from a global perspective," she says, and she credits her personal experience abroad for widening her horizons and deepening her understanding of world cultures and their differences. She believes that educators should start "introducing sensitivity awareness units across the curriculum as early as pre-school. These units," she adds, "would celebrate and embrace diversity. They must teach and promote the oneness for humankind." Mrs. Niewiaroski's students come away from her classes with a heightened understanding of different world views and with lowered tolerance to all forms of injustice. Mrs. Niewiaroski would like to some day have the opportunity to create a high school textbook that would investigate the status of women in traditional communities throughout the world. Her vast contact with women from other cultural contexts has been the basis for several studies she has developed on this subject.
