Biographical Information
Under Jacqueline Austin's leadership, John F. Kennedy Montessori Elementary School in Louisville became the first public school in Kentucky to adopt the Montessori teaching method. When Mrs. Austin became principal in 1990, she launched the school on a path of major reforms that have resulted in improved student academic performance, higher attendance rates and increased parental involvement. By implementing the School-To-Work program that includes an actual school post office, a school bank and financial services office, and a school TV station, she has created a career awareness program that helps students acquire a foundation in real-world activities and practices. In response to the needs of her community, Mrs. Austin has expanded school services to include G.E.D. adult education classes, an in-school counseling program and a Family Resource Center.
