Biographical Information
"When you do what you've always done, you'll be where you've always been," says Nancy Mounts, a home economics and family living teacher at North High School in Sioux City. "We can no longer afford to be where we've always been," she adds. When Mrs. Mounts started out as a teacher in 1958, she "felt that I was doing a good job, but for all practical purposes I was working with only the upper half of the class." Pointing out that only a little over 50 percent of students completed high school in the 1950's, Mrs. Mounts asserts that today, "in 1993, we are educating all children." In her continued efforts to reach all children effectively, Mrs. Mounts has organized the North High Parent Networking group to bring families of students into the educational process. She is also the founder of the Siouxland CARES about Substance Abuse, a broad-based community coalition that serves all secondary schools in Sioux City, and just this past year she served as Ambassador for Education in the state of Iowa.
