Biographical Information

Darlene Hughes teaches mathematics and computers to grades seven through twelve at Calamus-Wheatland Junior/Senior High School in Wheatland. "I work hard," she says, "to create a positive learning atmosphere in school in general, not just in my own classes." Mrs. Hughes is often the candidate of choice to spearhead change and break new ground in her school. Last year she led the re-organization of the school schedule "to provide longer class periods and more 'quality' time for planning and curriculum development." She also initiates the computer program now in full swing at Calamus-Wheatland Junior/Senior High School, and she introduced a Talented and Gifted program. Mrs. Hughes is equally responsible for "math clubs, computer clubs, various classes for adults, and community service projects." She has encouraged her students to participate in computer contests, computer fairs, and even teaching conferences where "students tutored other students as well as adults. My role," she says, "is to be the director or producer of a performance that puts the students in the limelight."
