Biographical Information

Ronald Fox, who taught mathematics for 34 years, has retired from the teaching profession and is currently acting as a consultant for the state's universities and community colleges. He is also working as a consultant at the Area Education Agency which supports the efforts of the 33 school districts in his part of the state. While still keeping his hand in the mix, he is enjoying retirement and the benefits that it offers. Previously Mr. Fox taught mathematics at Lewis Central High School in Council Bluffs, where he received the National Science Foundation's Presidential Award for teaching Excellence in the area of Mathematics for the state of Iowa. Mr. Fox never regretted his decision to become a teacher; "rough seas" not withstanding, "the voyage has been filled with many treasures and memories." He dreams of someday founding a high school that would be modeled along the lines of a community college. His ideal institution would mutually serve the needs of students and community; not only would it serve as a training ground to meet clearly defined community needs, but it would also provide a ready format to help workers keep abreast of changes in the workplace. Mr. Fox would like to see educators join forces with professionals, and he would like to see "grandparents in the classroom along with their children." In short, Mr. Fox would like to see "school becoming a place where life-long learning could be the rule, no a catch-phrase."

Personal Message

Over the past five years I have been working with a grant (Enhancing Education Through Technology-E2T2). It has given me a chance to keep abreast of the opportunities out there that are being utilized everyday by classroom teachers across Iowa. Many middle school teachers are providing their students with educational experiences that we're not available just a few short years ago. We have teachers who classroom walls are being expanded by the use of IP Video units. Multi-media projectors have allowed them to give students experiences of a "field-trip" nature everyday without ever leaving the confines of their classroom. In short, instructional opportunities through the use of technology are beginning to address equity issues that used to exist for many of our students. Good things are happening to help more of our students make connections from what they are learning in the classroom to real life applications. It is truly an exciting time to be a teacher.
