At Nellie Stone Johnson Community School, a TAP™ school in Minneapolis, third-grade teacher Kelly Woods serves the developmental needs of a diverse group of students. Aligning lessons with state standards and grade-level expectations, Woods has helped her students achieve consistent growth in core skills and make significant progress in reading and math on district assessments. Woods uses data to both evaluate and drive student instruction, constantly monitoring students through systems such as Computerized Achievement Level Testing (CALT). She also routinely works with parents to reinforce their children's education and solve academic or behavioral issues, and volunteers monthly at Family Fun & Learning Nights to strengthen relationships with students and parents. Even students with behavior issues and low skills have experienced success under her instruction. As a member of Johnson's TAP Leadership Team, Woods played an integral role in helping the school develop its implementation of TAP. Previously, she was a TAP mentor teacher for two years at Andersen Elementary School, where she helped students who started two years below grade level advance to grade level and higher. This experience provided her with effective skills that she now shares with the staff at Johnson, modeling instruction, observing colleagues in their classrooms, and peer-coaching them to help improve their teaching. Woods is also a certified TAP evaluator and cognitive coaching mentor.
